Bal Seal Showcases New Solution at Offshore Technology Conference

HOUSTON, TEXAS – April 30th, 2009 – Combining an innovative design with precision material technology, Bal Seal Engineering, Inc. has developed a new seal that can increase uptime and efficiency by as much 150% in critical oilfield equipment. The company will showcase the seal in its exhibit, #4924, at the upcoming 2009 Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, TX.

Consisting of a spring-energized, graphite-reinforced PTFE sealing ring coupled with a high-temperature engineered thermoplastic anti-extrusion element and a metal locking ring, the seal has been successfully tested and proven to deliver superior performance in progressive cavity pumps. Other potential applications include top drives, mud pumps, downhole tools and high-speed rotary devices.

According to the company, the new seal’s all-in-one configuration protects it against wear and extrusion, and makes it extremely resistant to oilfield fluids and gases. Its physical and mechanical properties enable it to perform over prolonged periods in applications characterized by extreme temperatures, speeds and pressures, and its canted-coil™ spring energizer ensures smooth, consistent deflection over the life of the seal.

Bal Seal says the new seal can help OEMs lower costs, reduce environmental risks posed by wellhead leaks, and deliver greater equipment efficiency. And because it can replace costly sealing assemblies and be retrofit into existing systems, the new seal simplifies maintenance and replacement operations.

In conjunction with its unveiling of the new seal at this year’s OTC event, Bal Seal is sponsoring a contest that challenges show attendees and oilfield professionals to name it. Bal Seal’s “Name The Seal” contest will award a new Apple iPhone to the entrant who offers up the best product moniker.
