Bal Seal Connects Energy with Ingenuity at Husum Trade Fair

Husum, Germany – The Husum WindEnergy Trade Fair, running this week in Husum, Germany, has long been a destination spot for engineers who want to see the latest in big turbines and complex technology. But this year, one of the fair’s biggest attractions may be its smallest and simplest: an electrical contact fashioned from a coiled spring.

The Bal Contact™, an electrically conductive device that employs unique, precision-engineered canted-coil™ spring technology, is being showcased at the 2008 Husum fair. And according to the product’s U.S-based manufacturer, Bal Seal Engineering, Inc., it has already caught the attention of engineers and other attendees seeking solutions for high, medium and low current electrical contact applications.

Shawn Noh, a Global Energy Market Manager for Bal Seal, attributes much of the interest in the Bal Contact to its simplicity.

The Bal Contact is available in a wide variety of coil heights and materials. Its spring is designed to maintain a nearly constant force over a broad range of working deflections, compensating for large mating tolerances and temperature changes without significant deviation from its initial force. Each coil in the Bal Contact works independently, maintaining contact with the mating surface and ensuring maximum conductivity.

Typical applications for the Bal Contact include busbar connections, gas-insulated switchgear contacts, circuit breakers and industrial fuse boxes. In some environments, the Bal Contact can also be used for EMI shielding/grounding purposes.
